Srinagar, March 7 -- The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has urged consumers to carefully read food labels before purchasing packaged food items, saying the information printed on product packaging helps people understand what they are consuming.

The food safety regulator issued the advisory as part of its Eat Right India awareness campaign aimed at encouraging healthier food choices among consumers.

Officials said that labels on packaged foods contain important details directly related to consumer health and safety.

According to the advisory, food labels provide information about ingredients used in the product, manufacturing and expiry dates, and possible allergens.
