Srinagar, March 8 -- Abdul Rashid Shah, veteran journalist, Chief Editor and owner of Urdu daily Nida-i-Mashriq passed away at Srinagar early on Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 78.

His Nimaz-e-Jinazah was offered at Jama Masjid Bagh-e-Mahtab Srinagar and his mortal remains were laid to rest in the afternoon at Mocho graveyard. His Jinazah was attended by prominent media persons, scholars, civil society leaders besides relatives and neighbours.

Born at Chinkral Mohallah, Habba Kadal in old Srinagar, Shah served in J&K Information Department for several years and quit his job in 1992 to launch his own newspaper Nida-e-Mashriq which soon created its own space among the serious readers of Kashmir.
