Srinagar, Aug. 25 -- Kashmiri women have been educators, organisers, entrepreneurs, rights advocates, cultural custodians and community leaders. Much of this work has gone without public recognition, even as it has influenced households, schools, local institutions and neighbourhoods. It is in this less visible realm of social change that the role of female activists becomes particularly significant.

Kashmir's history of women's activism also includes women who stepped beyond the confines of private life and entered public affairs. Through documentation, community organising and advocacy, they claimed a place in debates that had been largely considered the domain of men.
