The Government of India is promoting seaweed cultivation, along with marine fish farming, as a key component for developing the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as a hub for the Blue Economy. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) -Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) has undertaken the project 'Prefeasibility studies and establishment of pilot-scale farming of commercial seaweeds in Andaman coast'.
