The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 19 year-old woman committed suicide after being gang-raped by six people, including three minors. Reportedly, the woman went to a cattle barn for some work when the six accused allegedly caught her and gang-raped her.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Senior Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
