The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a Class 4 student was assaulted and subjected to casteist slurs by a teacher at a Government Primary School in Ukawal village, Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh on 28th July 2026. Reportedly, the teacher was enraged seeing the boy from a Dalit community drinking water from his bottle.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary and Shivpuri Superintendent of Police, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. I...
