The Government of India has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, marking a significant step towards establishing Indian Standard Time (IST) as the common, legally recognised and traceable time reference for the country.
The Rules, notified by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, on 27 August 2026 and published in the Official Gazette on 29 August 2026, provide a comprehensive framework for the generation, maintenance, dissemination and use of IST.
