India, April 20 -- Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi is likely to be appointed as India's next envoy to Bangladesh, marking a departure from the usual practice of assigning career diplomats to such key foreign postings.
The Ministry of External Affairs had not officially confirmed the appointment as of Monday morning (April 20, 2026). However, several leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party have already extended their congratulations.
Citing media reports, BJP IT cell in-charge and Bengal co-in-charge Amit Malviya wrote on X: "Congratulations to Shri Dinesh Trivedi, senior BJP leader, former Union Minister and Barrackpore MP, on being appointed as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh."
