Bhopal/IBNS, Sept. 28 -- A confrontation broke out between police and a large group of protesters in Ujjain on Monday as people gathered to oppose the removal of a portion of the historic Shahi Masjid as part of a road-widening project, media reports said.

The Ujjain Municipal Corporation has begun the process of removing the portion of the mosque that falls within the proposed road alignment.

The action concerns a portion of the Shahi Masjid, not the demolition of the entire mosque.

The mosque's imam, Mohammad Ibrahim, has said the structure dates back 636 years, to 1390.
