India, Aug. 4 -- Former Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was released from police custody on Tuesday, hours after being detained from his Chennai residence over his controversial remarks during a public meeting in Thanjavur on the Cauvery water dispute.

His release came after the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court that it had no intention of remanding him and would release him on station bail after questioning.

When Udhayanidhi's anticipatory bail plea came up before Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan, Advocate General Vijay Narayan told the court that the government would not seek his judicial remand.
