Washington, Sept. 10 -- The United States on Monday banned select Canadian alcoholic beverages and dairy products from entering the market.

President Donald Trump signed five proclamation marking a sharp escalation in a trade dispute that has been building since July and shows no sign of cooling.

Officials framed the bans as "decisive and appropriate action" against what they describe as Canada's continued discriminatory treatment of American goods.

The import bans take effect September 29, while a separate set of product additions and removals to the existing tariff list take effect September 15.
