India, Aug. 23 -- US President Donald Trump on Sunday targeted Canada after trade talks between the two countries collapsed, accusing the neighbouring nation of seeking the benefits of being an American state without actually becoming one.

"Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The remarks were Trump's first public comments since the latest round of trade negotiations failed, paving the way for new 50% US tariffs on a range of Canadian goods.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by announcing that Ottawa would match Washington's new tariffs dollar-for-dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.
