India, Aug. 1 -- The global mountaineering community is mourning the death of renowned Nepalese climber Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, who was killed in an avalanche while leading an expedition on Broad Peak in the Karakoram range in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

His expedition company confirmed the tragedy after Purja and several members of his team had been missing following the avalanche.

Elite Exped announced the news in an Instagram statement, describing Purja as one of the greatest climbers of his generation whose achievements inspired millions around the world.
