India, Aug. 18 -- The Madras High Court has clarified that there is no restriction on singing Tamil Nadu's state song, Tamil Thai Vazhthu, first at government functions in the state, observing that a recent Union Home Ministry notification does not prescribe that the song be relegated to a later position.

The clarification came during the hearing of a public interest litigation filed by Chennai-based Ananya Radhakrishnan, who sought directions to ensure that government functions in Tamil Nadu begin with Tamil Thai Vazhthu.

She also sought the quashing of a January 28 Union Home Ministry circular, claiming it required government functions to begin with Vande Mataram.
