Chennai/IBNS, July 27 -- The Madras High Court on Monday cancelled the Tamil Nadu government's decision to provide public employment to the families of those who died in the Karur stampede, putting the appointments made as part of the relief measures under judicial scrutiny.

The stampede occurred during a rally organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay in Karur on September 27 last year.

The incident claimed 41 lives and left several others injured.

The court's decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and a political dispute over the government's decision to provide jobs to the victims' families.
