Guwahati/IBNS, May 12 -- Himanta Biswa Sarma, the poster boy of Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, on Tuesday took oath as the state's Chief Minister after the saffron camp stormed back to power for a third consecutive term.

Sarma had first assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021 when the BJP returned to power in the northeastern state for a second straight term.

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP emerged as the single largest party with 82 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark on its own.

The Indian National Congress won 19 seats, while Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front secured 10 seats each.

The All India United Democratic Front suffered a major setback, managing to win only two seats in the election.
