India, April 9 -- A co-leader of Germany's Left party has called for the closure of a US military base in the country, citing President Donald Trump's threat to "annihilate" Iranian civilisation, which has drawn widespread international condemnation.

Schwerdtner criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz for remaining silent after Trump said on Tuesday that "a whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again."

Schwerdtner said that she expects Merz to clarify Germany's future relationship to the US.

"We have a right to know whether Germany wishes to remain a mere appendage to the US's erratic policies."
