India, May 31 -- A promising career in Indian para athletics came to a tragic end after 25-year-old national-level para athlete Chirag Tyagi was allegedly shot dead by a fellow competitor and longtime friend in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, just months before he was set to represent the country at the Para Asian Games in Japan.

Tyagi, considered one of India's emerging para sports talents, had recently won a gold medal in the 400-metre race at the National Para Athletics Championship in Bengaluru.

He had also secured a qualification for the Para Asian Games scheduled for October.

As concerns grew, the family approached the police and filed a missing person complaint.
