Lucknow, Oct. 19 -- Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has sparked a political controversy as he suggested illuminations replace diyas and candles lit to mark Diwali celebrations during Christmas festivities.

Questioning the money and effort spent on traditional lighting, Akhilesh advised that India should "learn" how cities across the world celebrate Christmas.

He then went on to demand the state government's removal, promising to use Christmas-style illumination during Diwali.

He added, "What can we expect from this government? It should be removed. We will make sure that there are more beautiful lights."

They added that the lamp count is being determined according to their placement pattern.
