India, Aug. 26 -- At least 13 children, mostly newborns, died after a massive fire broke out in the gynaecology ward of a hospital in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, on Tuesday, according to media reports.

The fire broke out in a nursery for newborn babies at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), sources told CNN.

According to rescue officials cited by the US news network, the blaze was apparently triggered by an explosion involving an air-conditioning compressor inside the nursery.

Hospital authorities reportedly managed to rescue one baby from the ward. Several other children were left in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.
