Youth drowns while escaping police custody
PATNA, May 31 -- A 25-year-old man accused of disrupting government works drowned in a pond at Sabalpur village under Morkahi police station area in Bihar's Khagaria district while allegedly attempting to escape from police custody, officers said on Saturday. The deceased's family, however, alleged foul play.
According to police, a team had apprehended two accused- Sourabh Kumar Paswan and Anshu Kumar Shah-- late Friday for allegedly disturbing law and order and obstructing government work. Sourabh fled and jumped into a nearby pond adjacent to a temple's premises. Police launched a search operation, but could not trace him in the dark and returned to the police station without informing Sourabh's family, who were later told about the incident by local chowkidars and villagers.
The body was fished out next morning by villagers who brought it to the police station and staged a protest. The family demanded action against the cops, accusing them of pushing Sourabh into the pond. They also alleged SHO Antima Kumari pointed a pistol at them late Friday. However, Kumari said that the pistol was taken out in self-defence and to remove the crowd from the police station late at night.
