PATNA, April 5 -- Two policemen, including the SHO of Falka police station in Katihar district, were suspended after a 24-year-old, accused of motorcycle theft, was found dead in police custody. Following the death in mysterious circumstances, angry villagers and relatives of the victim blocked state highway 77 near Falka main chowk, staged protests and attacked the police station, manhandled policemen, snatched their firearms and chased them away. Katihar SP Shikhar Jha ordered the suspension of SHO Ravi Kumar Rai and SI Kundan Patel for dereliction of duty. Police are probing the case after the victim's family alleged custodial death. The family has demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against the police personnel involved in the incident, alleging it to be a case of police brutality. Senior police officials arrived at the protest site and tried to pacify them. The victim has been identified as Rakesh Yadav (24) of Gopalpatti village. Two days ago, police had arrested Rakesh as a suspect in a case of motorcycle theft and he was kept at Falka police station. On Saturday morning Rakesh's health suddenly deteriorated and he was rushed to a community health centre, from where he was referred to Sadar Hospital for better treatment. However, he died before reaching hospital. The kin of the deceased alleged that Rakesh was brutally beaten up by the police in lock-up. "We reached the police station with the man whose bike was stolen. He didn't know who Rakesh was. However, the police did not let him go. In front of the family, police were torturing him to accept the crime. The IO of the bike theft case demanded bribe of Rs.50,000 to set him free from the police station," alleged Komal, sister of the deceased. Police claimed the youth was trying to commit suicide after hanging himself with the window, following which he was admitted to the hospital, but he died during treatment....
