Yatra sets optics for unity among INDIA partners
PATNA, Aug. 28 -- The Voter Adhikaar Yatra of Opposition INDIA bloc in Bihar slated to pass through 20 districts led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, RJD's Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and top leaders of the bloc, may have its agenda of red-flagging the deletion of names under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, but in many ways, the outreach with masses is seemingly a "show of unity" in the Opposition ranks ahead of the forthcoming polls.
The yatra is also being seen as a renewed attempt by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to give his party a rejig ahead of the state polls which are due in October- November this year with the Opposition coalition pitted against its main rival -- the NDA bloc of five parties led by chief minister Nitish Kumar.
Congress leaders agree that Gandhi along with Tejashwi has given the right optics, mingling with commoners telling them how BJP allegedly has colluded with the Election Commission of India (ECI) to manipulate the voters list in last many elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Gujarat with SIR in Bihar, another attempt to disenfranchise voters by deleting 6.5 million names in the draft rolls.
"Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi and all Opposition leaders are talking about facts such as how deletions of millions of names from voters list is dangerous for the country's democratic set up. They are educating people how deletion of names is a way to not only disenfranchise them but also deprive them from schemes be it ration, old age pension or subsidies. The yatra is getting overwhelming response and it's indicative how people in general are against the SIR," said Shakeel Ahmad Khan, Congress legislature Party leader in state assembly, who is travelling with Gandhi for the last many days.
Certainly, the yatra has made its campaign slogan "vote chor, gaddhi chhod" reverberate among masses and even to a certain extent on the national scale. It accuses BJP of manipulating the voters list to win polls and also highlight how SIR in Bihar is being done in a haphazard manner with gross discrepancies visible in the draft rolls in which only 72.4 million voters got enrolled out of 78.9 million voters earlier enrolled before June 24.
"Why is the BJP not complaining about deletion of names? Haven't their voters been deleted? The SIR in Bihar is an institutionalised theft of votes. 6.5 million voters have been deleted. The Opposition is complaining. The BJP is not complaining though because there is a 'partnership'," said Gandhi, a few days back during the yatra.
Tejahswi, CPI-ML(Liberation) general secretary Dipankar bhattacharya, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and other top leaders too have expressed how the SIR is an attempt to deprive lakhs of voters from the Dalit, deprived classes of their voting rights and also deny them government schemes.
"Just remain focussed on your voting rights. If you do not have the right to vote, you will become non-existent. Then they (read NDA) would deprive you all from schemes be it pension, ration and other financial assistance. That is the main gameplan of the BJP," Tejashwi has been saying in many small rallies and meetings.
He repeated the same on Wednesday at Gaighat in Muzaffarpur where Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin too was also present.
"Our yatra has aroused awareness as how SIR is being done to cheat voters. It our yatra which has thwarted the attempts of ECI to delete over 20% of the voters from the rolls and now, they are busy making corrections," said Bhatttacharya, during the yatra.
Significantly, the yatra having covered seven out of nine divisions in Bihar with Gandhi grabbing big eyeballs when he hit a field in Katihar to interact with makhna famers and also riding on a bike along with Tejashwi in Purnea- Araria stretch and also a similar show in Darbhanga is being viewed as show of unity among the INDIA bloc constituencies.
Many feel that Congress which still is a smaller force in Bihar with RJD being the senior most constituent enjoying around 22% of vote share with Muslim-Yadav traditional vote bank is also trying to regain its lost ground. "For the Congress, it is of course, a bid to gain support and it's visible in the yatra where youths from all sections have joined him along with Tejashwi. The INDIA bloc is surely trying to show unity as we do not want to make mistakes like we did in 2020 assembly polls," said Kauqab Quadri, senior Congress leader. RJD's state spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan, however, said the yatra was a collective effort where all constituents had put in their strength to ensure that discrepancies in SIR are corrected and people get to know the conspiracy behind deletion of names.
"Right now, our focus is on SIR and ensuring that those people whose names were not enrolled get enlisted in the voters list. It is our campaign, which has put pressure on the ECI to make corrections to a large extent," Gagan said.
The yatra is set to conclude on August 31 followed by a padyatra on September 1 in Patna....
