WRD accelerates process for construction of 3 barrages for flood control
PATNA, Jan. 9 -- The Water Resources Department (WRD) has accelerated the process for construction of three barrages, two on Bagamati and one on Mahananda river with the detailed project reports (DPRs) of the three projects likely to be finalised by April, officials familiar with the matter said.
The three barrages with canal irrigation infrastructure would be benefiting farmers in Kishanganj, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Samastipur districts with estimated cost of each barrage to be around Rs.1,000 crore, officials said.
"The DPRs for the barrages are underway and will be finalised in the next few months. The process has gained momentum with the preliminary project report (PPR) being already been approved earlier. Once the DPR comes, we will initiate the other process for constructing the barrages," said principal secretary, WRD Santosh Kumar Mall.
Officials said the three barrages were going to be constructed as part of the Rs.11,500 crore allocated to Bihar in the 2024-25 Union budget for flood control measures and irrigation facilities in the state. There were other projects also being taken up under this budgetary allocation, officials said.
The proposed barrage across Mahananda in Kishanganj district would be located at Taiyabpur, which would help farmers of Pothia block, Bahadurganj and Kishanganj blocks as the barrage would also have a canal irrigation system of 8.55 kms and 12.65 kms , as per the project. Similarly, two other barrages are going to be constructed on Bagmati river in Sitamarhi district with its location to be at Dheng and Kataunjha .
Officials said the upcoming barrage at Dheng with a canal irrigation network would help in flood mitigation and irrigation in at least 13 blocks of Sitamarhi,five blocks in Sheohar, seven in East Champaran, two blocks in Muzaffarpur, five blocks and one Darbhanga where as the barrage at Kataunjha would benefit five blocks in Muzaffarpur, four in Darbhanga, one each in Sitamarhi and Samastipur....
