SASARAM, Sept. 13 -- A woman believed to have been murdered in Rohtas 12 years ago and whose husband, father-in-law and eight relatives were sent to jail for her "dowry death" has been found alive in Garhwa district of Jharkhand, according to police officers aware of the development. The woman, Saraswati Devi alias Kanti Devi, was found living with a paramour, said police, adding that she was produced before a court in Sasaram on Saturday following a case registered against her for misleading the police. According to the woman's father-in-law, Dilip Mehta, his son Arun Mehta of Balrati Bigha in the Dehri Mufussil police station area, married Saraswati Devi, a resident of Pirauta village in the Fesar police station area of Aurangabad district, in 2002. The couple had a son after two years into the marriage. Twelve years later, in 2014, Devi ran off with Rattu Singh, a fellow villager without the family's knowledge. On August 22 that year, the body of an unidentified woman was recovered from a canal near Khanda village in the Dehri Mufassil police station area. The woman's brother identified the body as his sister's. The village chowkidar also identified the body as that of Saraswati Devi. Following the post-mortem, the body was cremated. Subsequently, a case was registered against eight individuals-including the woman's husband and father-in-law for her "murder" over dowry, and they were sent to jail. However, the in-laws reached a settlement with the woman's maternal family by paying them Rs.3 lakh. Following this, the case ended and the accused were released from jail, Mehta said. About 12 years after the incident, in 2026, the family learnt that Saraswati Devi had changed her name to Kanti Devi and was living with Rattu Singh at Labhari Kala village, under Kandi police station in Garhwa district of Jharkhand. After proper verification, her father-in-law informed Rohtas Superintendent of Police (SP) Raj, who sent a police team that recovered the woman from Jharkhand. The SP further said that a case has been registered against the woman for misleading the police, and she has been produced in court. Following the revelation of the full facts of the case, the police are now conducting a fresh investigation.
