Villages in Bihar's Supaul hit by flood
SUPAUL/ARARIA, Oct. 7 -- Discharge of over 5 lakh cusecs of water through Birpur barrage in Bihar's Supaul district on Sunday evening triggered the fear of October floods. All the 56 gates of the barrage located on the India-Nepal border were opened to reduce the pressure on the structure.Train services were affected on the Katihar-Jogbani line.
The sudden surge in discharge inundated over 100 villages situated between the eastern and western Kosi embankments.
Supaul district magistrate Sawan Kumar said, "Normalcy has started returning fast," adding. "36 community kitchens have been opened in the flood-affected areas."
Kumar along with superintendent of police (SP) Sarath RS monitored the situation in and around the barrage and flood-affected areas and later directed the authorities concerned to make public announcements through loudspeakers urging people to move to safer places, also cautioning them against rumours.
Besides district police forces, NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations.
According to the bulletin issued by water resources department the water discharge went up to 5.18 lakh cusecs on Sunday afternoon - the highest recorded this year. Way back in 1968, on October 5, the discharge was recorded at 9.18 lakh cusecs.
Incessant rainfall in the catchment areas in Nepal also caused floods in several areas in Araria and Kishanganj districts. In Kishanganj floodwaters were reported flowing on the Terhagachh -Bahadurganj road, badly affecting traffic.
Low lying areas in three blocks of Araria have been flooded following the spate on Parman and Bakra rivers....
