MADHUBANI, Sept. 15 -- Madhubani police detained a 55-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh at Laukaha on the India-Nepal border and interrogated him for two days on the basis of intelligence inputs, officials said. The suspect, identified as Jalal Ahmad Lari, a native of Kanpur, was picked up on Friday night following a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Police said he had been staying in Laukaha for quite some time, though his family originally hails from Kanpur. Lari earlier ran a leather factory in Kanpur, which is now closed. His forefathers had purchased land in Laukaha, and he often visited the area to look after it. Police recovered a Nepalese driving licence and identity card from him, along with an Aadhaar card and details of numerous bank accounts. Investigators also found that he had travelled abroad frequently. His mobile phone contained a large number of documents, which are being examined, police said on Sunday. According to local villagers, Lari had been visiting Laukaha for several years and often stayed there with his wife. His ancestors had purchased several bighas of land in the area, most of which he later sold, though some portions still remain in his possession. Villagers said they had known him for a long time but admitted being unaware of the complete truth about him. Police added that Lari's sister was married in Pakistan in 2011, and he is also said to have travelled there. Teams from the IB and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Patna questioned him extensively about the recovered documents. "The interrogation was conducted on the basis of intelligence inputs. He has been directed to extend full cooperation in the ongoing investigation," said Madhubani Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogendra Kumar, adding that surveillance has been tightened along the India-Nepal border in view of recent developments. After preliminary questioning, Lari was released on the condition that he would cooperate with investigators whenever summoned. Authorities said further action would be taken after scrutiny of documents and completion of the probe....
