Umar Khalid gets three day bail as mother is due for surgery
New Delhi, May 23 -- The Delhi High Court on Friday granted interim bail from June 1 to June 3 to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots, in view of his mother's surgery.
A bench of justices Prathiba M Singh and Madhu Jain, noting that Khalid had been granted interim bail in the past too, said the bail would commence at 7am on June 1 and end at 8pm on June 3.
"The appellant has been released on interim bail in the past, and the court is aware of the fact that the regular bail application was rejected by the Supreme Court in the judgment of Gulfisha Fatima, where the Supreme Court held the appellant to be one of the prime conspirators. However, taking an empathic view that the mother has to go for surgery, the court is inclined to grant interim bail for three days to meet the mother from June 1 to June 3," the court said in the order.
While granting him bail, the bench directed him to furnish bail bonds of Rs.1 lakh and ordered that he remain either at his residence in Delhi or at the hospital. The HC also directed him to use only one mobile phone number and remain in regular contact with the investigating officer....
