BHABUA, Aug. 2 -- The special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court of district and additional sessions judge- 2 at Bhabua, Vinay Prakash Tiwary, sentenced two narcotics smugglers to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, officials said on Saturday. Accused Dipu, a resident of Rajakot under Haidergarh police station in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh and Dharmendra Kumar of Dumarkon village in Adhaura police station of Kaimur district, were found guilty of procuring narcotics from UP and supplying the same in Bihar. Special public prosecutor Mithilesh Kumar said that police received specific intelligence that smugglers were bringing a large consignment of cannabis from UP on September 30, 2023. A police team comprising the then Adhaura SHO Inspector Balvrind Prasad and armed police personnel rushed to the location and arrested two people carrying 38 kilograms of cannabis on a bike near Dighar More on the Adhaura-Bhabua main road, which connects Bihar from UP. Police submitted a chargesheet in the court and recommended a speedy trial. After considering the manual and scientific evidence presented by the prosecution in a logical and effective manner, the court found both the accused guilty under Section 20(b)(2)(c) of the NDPS Act and sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI). The court also imposed a fine of Rs.1 lakh on each convict, with an additional six months' imprisonment in case of default in payment of the fine.
