Two Independent biennial poll winners join the BJP in Patna
PATNA, Nov. 1 -- In a significant political development, two independent winners of the recently concluded biennial polls--Bansi Dhar Brajwasi (Tirhut Graduates' constituency) and Rahul Raj (Saran Teachers' constituency)-- joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Patna on Saturday. They were inducted into the party in the presence of chief minister Samrat Choudhary, state president Sanjay Sarougi, and other senior leaders.
Brajwasi, who got elected for the second time from the Tirhut graduates' constituency , had defeated his nearest rival Abhishek Jha of the JD(U) by a margin of 9147 votes while Rahul Raj, a rebel BJP leader who fought the Saran teachers' constituency as an independent, had defeated his nearest rival Anand Pushkar of the JD(U) by a margin of 1815 votes, as per the data of the election commission released on Friday.
In the final results, BJP, RJD and independents won two seats each, and one each for the Janata Dal (United) and Jan Suraaj Party (JSP).
Now, the two independent MLCs joining the BJP is likely to increase the number of MLCs of the ruling party in the state legislative council from its existing strength of 26. BJP state spokesperson Danish Eqbal in a press statement said both the newly elected MLCs , who joined the BJP, have given their support to the party.
A state BJP press statement said newly elected MLCs from Tirhut graduates' constituency Brajwasi and Saran teachers' constituency Rahul Raj took the membership of the BJP. The statement said state president of the BJP Sanjay Sarougi gave membership to the two MLCs during a meeting of the legislative party members which was attended by the chief minister, Bihar in-charge of the party and national general secretary Harish Dwivedi and senior leaders. The meeting also discussed various issues on strengthening the party and urged party workers to work in a coordinated manner. Meanwhile, opposition RJD described the induction of two newly elected MLCs in the BJP despite winning as independents a total violation of constitutional norms by the saffron party. " The induction of two MLCs who won as independents into the BJP is totally illegal as the two newly elected legislators have not yet taken oath of secrecy in the house. Does the anti-defection law permit this kind of induction or is it as per constitutional norms?" asked Shakti Singh Yadav, senior RJD leader and former spokspesson.
Yadav also said the induction of the two MLCs just a day after final results of the biennial polls came indicates how the BJP having won just two seats was totally rattled by its poor performance and has started its old trick of poaching legislators." The induction of two winners from Tirhut graduates seat and Saran teachers seat, Brajwasi and Rahul Raj into the BJP is a warning sign for the NDA's partner Janata Dal (united) as both these MLCs defeated JD(U) candidates. The JD(U) is now all set to get disintegrated as the BJP is playing hard to make its partner weak in the state," Yadav said....
