BETTIAH, Dec. 15 -- Bihar's East Champaran police arrested an enforcement sub-inspector (ESI) of the transport department for allegedly extorting gratification from a vehicle driver for a favour in overloading on nation highway near Piprakothi in the district, police said on Sunday. In a statement, East Champaran police said the action was taken following complaint from Mrityunjay Kumar Prakash, of Bhawanipur, under Sangrampur police station, that he was subjected to extortion in the name of overloading near Piprakothi on NH-28 on December 12 night. "It was reported that his vehicle was stopped and Rs.3,000 in cash and Rs.7,000 via account transfer, were taken from him," the statement said. For verification of the information and necessary action, on the directions of senior officers, all officials on duty at that time were called to the police station. Thereafter, the informant identified all the officials, in which the official who took the money was identified as ESI Hari Shankar Kumar of the transport department, police said....
