RANCHI, Jan. 8 -- Former state minister and working president of the Jharkhand Congress Bandhu Tirkey demanded scheduled tribe (ST) status to tribals from Jharkhand settled in Andaman and Nicobar. "The tribal people displaced about one and a half centuries ago from Jharkhand and taken to various islands of Andaman & Nicobar archipelago have still not been granted ST status after 78 years of Independence, which is extremely unfortunate," Tirkey said during his visit to the islands. "It is necessary to raise a strong voice ... for our brothers and sisters taken to remote island groups in the name of cutting trees, clearing forests and are today living a life of severe neglect," he said....
