PATNA, Sept. 20 -- From riding horses, distributing pens and addressing crowds from the rooftop of his custom made bus, wearing bright red, green and white T shirts, leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav is leaving no stone unturned to make his ongoing 'Bihar Adhikar Yatra' a show of political symbolism and an outreach programme to showcase himself as the youthful chief ministerial face of the RJD and INDIA bloc despite no formal announcement coming yet from the bloc. The five-day road trip starting from Jehanabad on Wednesday has already touched districts like Nalanda, Patna, Begusarai and Khagaria with five more districts to covered. Covering several hundred kilometres each day through the rural countryside of Bihar, the 35- yr old Yadav scion is working hard to make a connection with masses by promising jobs to youths and assuring that his government , if it comes to power, would usher in development. "Humari sarkar padhai, likhai, dawai, sunwai ki sarkar hogi (our government would be committed to education, employment, health and redressal of commoners), Yadav has been saying in public rallies. One cannot miss the political symbolism in the course of the road show, either. Like in Mokama- the home turf of strongman and former MLA Anant Singh - Tejaswhi chose to distribute a large number of pens to the milling crowd , stating that 'his vision is to give youths the power of education instead of encouraging people to take guns'. Many feel, the pen distribution show at Mokama was a deliberate move to needle the ruling Janata Dal (united) and Anant Singh in his home turf as how RJD -despite being accused of patronising crime- is not in favour of ' gun culture'. Yadav has made oblique attacks against Singh in the recent past, stating that the state government gives patronage to criminals, especially after the shootout between one group led by Singh and another of a rival party in Mokama a few months back. Singh is said to be eyeing a ticket from the JD(U) in the forthcoming polls. Moreover, Tejashwi also rode on a horse at Mokama - where incendiary caste wars between dominant caste castes and poor classes was common in mid 80s and 1990s - as a symbolic assertion that old feudal order in the state has long been shattered much to the credit of his party RJD, which continues to espouse the cause of social justice to fight for the rights of oppressed classes. Bhumihars and Yadavs along with other castes from EBC groups have considerable population at Mokama. '"We are getting overwhelming support and people are looking forward to bringing change in government in Bihar," Yadav told reporters, while riding a horse. Incidentally, Tejashwi in his course of yatra has preferred to look more youthful, choosing to wear bright T shirts instead of white kurta pyjama, which is seen as a move to connect with youth. Many feel, Yadav is taking a cue from the trademark style of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who usually dresses in casuals by wearing white T shirts. "Tejashwi is projecting himself as the youthful CM face of INDIA bloc. This is one reason, he is wearing T shirts instead of white kurta-pyjama, which gives a more staid look," said Rakesh Tiwary, a political observer. DM Diwakar, another political observer, too feels Tejashwi is trying hard to connect with youth and his yatra is aimed at show of strength to offset the growing bargaining power of the Congress after the Voter Adhikar Yatra. "This yatra is aimed to project Tejashwi as the CM face of the INDIA bloc. This is why, Tejashwi is playing assertive and also sending a message to all allies including Congress that RJD has a mass base in Bihar," Diwakar said. However, JD(U) and BJP leaders claimed that the yatra was a knee jerk reaction of the Yadav scion, who was overshadowed by Rahul Gandhi during the Voter Adhikar Yatra. "Tejashwi is doing the yatra only to project himself as CM face of the opposition realizing how he was overshadowed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. This shows, how there is a game of one upmanship within the INDIA bloc where allies are fighting for saving their own political turf. This yatra would serve no purpose to RJD or Tejashwi," said Danish Iqbal, state spokesperson of the BJP. Arvind Nishad of the JD(U) too said that Tejashwi was only trying to sell dreams but there are not many takers....
