Tejashwi faces EC probe over claim on Voter ID details
PATNA, Aug. 4 -- A day after triggering a controversy by claiming that his name was missing from the newly prepared voter draft roll, Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav now faces the Election Commission investigation into his EPIC (Election Photo Identity Card) that he had showed in his Saturday press conference stating that details of this card was not available in the new voter list.
He has been asked to hand over the stated EPIC to the election officials for investigation.
Tejashwi's claim of not being in new voter rolls was refuted by the Patna election officials and Patna District Magistrate, who happens to be the highest poll official of the district. He showed in a press conference that his name figured as per another EPIC details in the draft rolls, showing him as a voter at library building, Bihar Animal Sciences University, Patna.
On Sunday, Gaurav Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer, Patna Sadar cum Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), Digha assembly constituency on Sunday asked the Opposition leader to give details of one of his EPIC cards mentioned in the Saturday's presser on the ground that the said "EPIC number appears to be non-existent".
In the letter, the SDO has informed the Opposition leader that his statement given during the presser in which he claimed that his name was missing from the draft electoral rolls was investigated.
"It was found that your (read Tejashwi) name figures at polling station 204 (library building, Bihar Animal Sciences, University, Patna) with serial number 416, with the EPIC number RAB0456228," the letter states. "As per your statement in the presser, your EPIC number is RAB2916120 whereas in the preliminary investigation, it appears that this EPIC has not been issued officially. You are therefore requested to hand over the EPIC card in original for detailed investigation," the letter further stated.
On Saturday, Tejashwi had held a presser at his official residence where he had alleged his name was not being found in the draft rolls and showed to the media how his EPIC card number ( RAB2916120) did not show any records through a search link of ECI.
Patna DM SM Thiyagarajan also refuted the claims. "The name of the leader of the Opposition is definitely there. The claim that his name is not there is completely wrong. His name is still there at the booth where he used to vote, and it is there in the public domain, everyone can see it," the DM had said.
The DM had hinted that Tejashwi Yadav might be looking through a different EPIC card or number, which could be confusing.
"In the affidavit filed by him during nomination in the 2020 election, he has been given this EPIC number in it; this is the number that we are telling. Now, if he is looking at any other EPIC card, then we will have to look at it. He has also filed a nomination in 2020 on the basis of the EPIC card given, and it still exists. There is no change in it. The EPIC number that you had earlier will remain the same," he further said.
The ECI too had strongly refuted the claims of Yadav. The ECI officials on Saturday had said that the Opposition leader's name figured in the draft electoral rolls and had asserted that no records have been found for the second EPIC number as searched by them.
Agency reports quoting ECI sources had said that it was quite likely that the second EPIC (Election Photo Identity Card) was never made through official channels.
Agency reports quoting ECI sources had also rejected Tejaswi Prasad's allegation that his EPIC number was changed, saying that the RJD leader used the Electoral Roll with EPIC No. RAB0456228 for filing his nomination papers on affidavit in 2020.
The sources said that he was having this EPIC number even in the electoral roll in 2015 and his name with this EPIC number exists in the draft Electoral Rolls. The agency reports, quoting ECI sources, said that the other EPIC number -- RAB2916120 -- has been found to be non-existent, and more than 10 years of records have been checked, and further inquiries are being made to understand "whether that is a forged document".
BJP MP Sambit Patra on Sunday lashed out at the Opposition leader over the latter's claim that his name was missing from the draft rolls and alleged that his EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) number has been "changed". Patra alleged that Tejashwi had two EPIC numbers and two Voter IDs, and called Yadav's accusation a "conspiracy to defame India."
The JD(U), a key ally of the NDA in Bihar, too has slammed Tejashwi for making baseless allegations about his name not figuring in the draft rolls and also accused the 35 year old Yadav scion of committing "fraud" by having two EPIC cards.
In a presser in New Delhi, Patra said, "This means he (Tejashwi) had two EPIC numbers... Did he have two voter IDs? The way in which Congress and RJD are mounting attacks on the EC, it seems to be a conspiracy to defame India.
He said, "Sarvochh neta ke hain two EPIC numbers to karyakarta ka haal kya hoga (if the chief has two EPIC numbers, then what would be the condition of the party workers)."
Meanwhile, there has been no reaction from Tejashwi on the letter issued by the SDO, Patna Sadar till Sunday evening. But party's state spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan said that the SDO's letter to the Opposition leader was a ploy by the ECI to divert attention from the questions raised by Yadav regarding alleged anomalies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
"The ECI at the behest of the BJP wants to divert attention from the anomalies pointed out by Yadav regarding SIR and clarifications sought by INDIA bloc leaders on the issue. There have been gross discrepancies detected in the draft electoral rolls. In the draft rolls issued in which Tejashwi's name figures with a particular house number, several other electors' names having different surnames have been mentioned having the same house number. Does one family have members with different surnames? This must be clarified by the ECI," said Gagan....
