GUWAHATI, Feb. 16 -- Security in the northeast is of prime concern and several strategic projects are underway to ensure there's no loss of connectivity to the region in case of an attack from an enemy nation, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. Sarma's comments came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an emergency landing facility (ELF) on a national highway at Moran in Assam's Dibrugarh district and two days after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the PM, approved the construction of a twin-tube road-cum-rail project underneath the Brahmaputra in the state connecting Numaligarh to Gohpur. The Rs.18,662-crore project is the second such twin tunnel anywhere in the world after a similar one connecting Germany and Denmark being built under Baltic Sea. "If in case of war, some bridges over Brahmaputra are bombed, the twin-tunnel will help in maintaining connectivity between the north and south banks of the river. The other strategic project is the construction of a railway tunnel through the Siliguri Corridor, which is also known as the chicken's neck," Sarma said at a press conference in Guwahati.
