BETTIAH, Aug. 7 -- The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is trying to maintain "status quo" after days of tension in Susta, a "disputed" territory along the Indo-Nepal border juxtaposing West Champaran district of Bihar, officials said. Following the August skirmishes that erupted after the SSB objected to a construction bid on the Nepali side, the SSB also registered an FIR against 150-200 Nepalese nationals for disturbance and obstructing personnel while they were performing their duty. The FIR has been registered at Valmikinagar police station in Bagaha police district. "The SSB is patrolling the area as usual," said Rajesh Kumar, superintendent of police (SP), Bagaha. Meanwhile, the 21st Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is likely to hold a meeting soon with Nepal's Armed Police Force (APF) to discuss and resolve the situation arising from the alleged violation of the status quo in the disputed Susta area along the Indo-Nepal border, officials said. A senior SSB official said the proposed meeting aims to reaffirm and maintain the status quo in the "disputed" Susta area. "It has come to light that during the construction of an embankment on the Gandak river in the Susta area, work stretched beyond a couple of metres away from the disputed territory," the official said, requesting anonymity. The official said the proposed meeting with Nepal's Armed Police Force (APF) is expected to focus on ensuring that the status quo is maintained in the disputed area. In an FIR (No. 119/26), dated August 4, 2026, lodged at Valmikinagar police station on the complaint of Awadesh Kumar, assistant commandant of G Company, Rampurwa, the SSB alleged that the team noticed that a group of people had started constructing a bandh (dam) on the disputed land in violation of the existing status quo during the border patrolling on August 2, 2026. "When objected to the construction and informed the locals that no construction can be made on disputed land, around 150-200 people from the Nepal side, gathered at the spot, became aggressive, obstructed the SSB personnel from performing their official duties and assaulted the SSB personnel," reads the complaint. The Susta border dispute between India and Nepal involves a vast tract of land along the Gandak (Narayani) River. The dispute arose following the shifting river course over time, prompting Nepal to claim Susta under West Nawalparasi district in Lumbini province and India under Bihar's West Champaran district. The development came even after a joint meeting of Bagaha superintendent, ATF Nepal and SSB on July 31, 2026 agreed upon adhering to the status quo on the disputed land and refraining from constructing a bandh.
