New Delhi, Feb. 16 -- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India at the swearing in ceremony of the new elected government in Bangladesh, ministry of external affairs has announced on Sunday. Rahman, who has swept the Bangladesh national polls, had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other SAARC leaders including Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif for his swearing in ceremony. India's decision to send Birla signals India's willingness to engage positively with the eastern neighbour after a rough patch in the relationship when Md Yunus led interim government was in power. "Shri Om Birla, Hon'ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha, will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government of Bangladesh led by H.E. Mr. Tarique Rahman, Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in Dhaka on February 17, 2026," MEA communique said. It is learnt that Bangladesh had invited PM Narendra Modi to the ceremony.
