PATNA, Aug. 29 -- Although water levels in Bihar rivers have surged, the situation remains stable because the Gandak river-the main watercourse receiving the bulk of discharge from Nepal-is currently out of danger. The state government is, however, alert and closely monitoring the conditions, assured deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, who also holds the portfolio of water resources. Choudhary, who inspected the Gandak barrage in Valmikinagar on the Indo-Nepal border on Thursday, said the place where the glacier burst occurred, causing the catastrophe, was around 250-300 feet above the Bihar entrance point, which reduced the impact of the flow. "What has helped Bihar further is that the water level in the Gandak river was below normal when the catastrophe struck Nepal. That also reduced the impact, as it could absorb the additional water flow, but due to the magnitude of the crisis in Nepal, Bihar remains on high alert," he added. Several districts in Bihar were put on high alert due to Nepal floods and the likely impact on the Gandak river from heavy discharge. However, no dangerous change was reported in the Gandak water level despite the discharge.
