SHO, CO face action as Bihar probes boat crash
RAGHOPUR (VAISHALI), Oct. 15 -- The district administration of Vaishali on Wednesday sought clarification from Circle Officer (CO) and station house officer (SHO) of Raghopur police station for inaction on night operation of boats despite it being against the rules. Both the officers have been issued showcause notices and their salaries withheld till the next order.
District magistrate Varsha Singh said that both the officers -- SHO Avadesh Kumar and CO Deepak Kumar -- would have to submit their replies at the earliest. She added that an inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the tragedy and to find out whether administrative lapse is responsible for it.
Meanwhile, the toll of the Tuesday's tragedy in the Diara area (flooded by water overflowed from the nearby Ganga river) stayed at 13 -- all children below the age of 15 -- and the rescue operations were halted after rigorous search for missing throughout the day, district magistrate Varsha Singh said. "The damaged boat, which was carrying over 20 passengers, has been retrieved," said SDRF sub-inspector Jai Deep Narayan Singh, adding that rescue boats of the SDRF, and also those of NDRF, were searching for missing in the area till late on Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, one of the survivors, Ashwini Kumar, told reporters, "There were 25 people on the boat, including me. I was rescued by my grandfather." Another survivor Aditya Kumar claimed there was a small hole in the boat through which the water started seeping in and the boat started going down.
"As soon as water started filling inside the boat, people started to jump out. Ultimately, the boat capsized. Some swam to the shore. I caught hold of a wooden log thrown into the water to rescue people and swam to the shore," said Aditya.
