New Delhi, Aug. 10 -- The Supreme Court on Sunday released the collegium's resolutions recommending the appointment of four full-time chief justices to Bombay, Calcutta, Punjab and Haryana and Patna high courts, while the Rajasthan high court will, for the time being, continue to function under an acting chief justice. The development comes a day after HT reported the Supreme Court collegium had decided to recommend five judges for appointment as chief justices of different high courts, in a move aimed at filling several vacancies that had left courts functioning under acting chief justices. The collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and comprising justices Vikram Nath and BV Nagarathna, has recommended Delhi high court judge Justice V Kameswar Rao as chief justice of the Patna high court. It has also recommended Allahabad high court judge Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi as chief justice of the Bombay high court and Bombay high court's acting chief justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge as full-time chief justice of the Calcutta high court. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, who has been functioning as acting chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court since June 2, has been recommended as its full-time chief justice. The collegium had also decided to recommend Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, who has been acting chief justice of the Rajasthan high court since September 28, 2025, as its full-time chief justice. However, the resolution concerning his appointment was not released on Sunday, leaving the Rajasthan high court to continue functioning under him as acting chief justice for now. The collegium's move addresses four of the high courts that have been functioning under acting chief justices. According to the position as on August 1, the Bombay high court had been headed by Justice Ghuge as acting chief justice since June 2, while the Calcutta high court had been under acting chief justice Tapabrata Chakraborty since June 21. The Madhya Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh high courts have also had acting chief justices since June 2. The Punjab and Haryana HC has been headed by Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as acting chief justice since June 2, while Justice Sharma has been acting chief justice of the Rajasthan HC since September 28, 2025. Patna, too, was shown as being headed by an acting chief justice in the August 1 position chart. The collegium has not taken a decision, for the time being, on appointing full-time chief justices for the Madhya Pradesh high court and the high court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. In a separate set of recommendations released on Sunday, the collegium also recommended the transfer of two senior judges from the Orissa HC. Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak has been recommended for transfer to the Gujarat high court, while justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra has been recommended for transfer from the Orissa high court to the Chhattisgarh high court. The transfer recommendations are subject to the approval of the Centre and the issuance of the requisite notifications. The collegium's latest exercise comes at a time when the higher judiciary is also facing vacancies at the Supreme Court level. The SC currently has three vacancies. Two more vacancies are scheduled to arise later this year with the retirement of Justice Sanjay Karol on August 22 and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma on November 29. Justice Karol was elevated to the Supreme Court on February 6, 2023, while Justice Sharma joined the apex court on November 9, 2023.
