Rs.500 bribe, 20-yr fight: 80-yr-old J'khand ex-govt official convicted
RANCHI, June 14 -- A Special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in Ranchi convicted an 80-year-old former Panchayat Sevak, Satyanarayan Ram, for accepting a bribe of Rs.500. The judgment, delivered by Special Judge Onkar Nath Choudhary, brings a conclusion to a legal battle that lasted over two decades.
The case dates back to early 2006 in the Sisai Block of Gumla district. Complainant Mohd Naseem Khan had applied for a house under the Indira Aawas Yojana. Accused Satyanarayan Ram was tasked with submitting a mandatory site verification report.
According to the prosecution, Ram demanded a bribe of Rs.500 to forward the report, stating the paperwork would not move without the money. Refusing to pay, Khan filed a complaint with the Vigilance Bureau, leading to a verification trap and Ram's subsequent arrest on April 8, 2006.
An ACB court advocate said the order was delivered on Thursday and uploaded on the website on Friday.
"Despite defence arguments highlighting inconsistencies in witness testimonies and questioning the procedural validity of the prosecution sanction, the court found the evidence sufficient for conviction. The court sentenced Ram under two distinct counts of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Under section 7 of the Act, six months of rigorous imprisonment alongside a fine of Rs.5,000 and udner Section 13(2) of the Act, one year of rigorous imprisonment alongside a fine of Rs.10,000," the advocate said sharing the court order.
