Rs.12cr Marijuana concealed in toy packets seized at Gaya Airport; 5 held
GAYA JI, Jan. 28 -- The customs department at Gaya International Airport seized 33 kg of high-grade hydroponic weed (marijuana), valued at Rs.12 crore, from passengers arriving on an international flight, officials said.
The contraband was concealed in over 100 toy packets hidden inside multiple bags. The narcotics had been brought from Thailand on Thai AirAsia flight FD-122. Five smugglers - including two women - suspected to be part of an international drug trafficking racket, were arrested and are being interrogated to ascertain their Indian and overseas links, officials said.
Hydroponic weed is cultivated using water-based hydroponic techniques and is significantly more potent than traditionally grown cannabis. Owing to its high THC content, it is in high demand at rave parties and commands a much higher price. Since it is banned in India, the drug is smuggled illegally, fetching prices running into millions. The variety is mainly cultivated in Thailand, Canada and the US, and is commonly trafficked via air routes.
Arun Prasad, Assistant Commissioner of Customs at Gaya International Airport, said officials grew suspicious while screening some bags on the X-ray machine. "On thorough checking, hydroponic cannabis was found cleverly concealed inside toy packets. The bags were seized following due procedure," he said.
The seized drug weighed 33 kg and is estimated to fetch around Rs.35 lakh per kg in the international market.
The arrested accused have been identified as Ashwini Kumar Dwivedi and Gulshan Meena of Ghaziabad, Gaurav Vidhuri of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, Manpreet Kaur of Bathinda, and Dilpreet Kaur of Ludhiana in Punjab....
