Ranchi's healer perishes in the line of duty
Ranchi, Feb. 25 -- The medical community and the state of Jharkhand are mourning the loss of Dr. Vikas Kumar Gupta, a dedicated physician who died in the line of duty during the Chatra air ambulance crash on Monday.
Dr. Gupta's journey to becoming a doctor was a testament to his family's resilience. His father, Bajrangi Prasad, a native of Aurangabad in Bihar, reportedly sold his ancestral farmland and took on significant financial debt to ensure his son could complete his MBBS from SCB Medical College, Cuttack, in Odisha. At the time of his passing, Dr. Gupta was serving as a committed medical officer at Sadar Hospital in Ranchi.
The tragedy unfolded when Dr Gupta volunteered to accompany Sanjay Kumar, a 41-year-old patient suffering from critical 65% burns, for an emergency transfer to a specialized hospital in New Delhi.
Beyond his professional accolades, Dr. Gupta was a father to a seven-year-old son, Mehul Gupta. His father's grief has resonated across the state, as he questioned why high-level burn care was not available locally, necessitating a risky flight that ultimately claimed his son's life.
"My elder son was posted in the Sadar Hospital, Ranchi... If there had been proper health facilities here, why would they have gone to Delhi for treatment? I had sold my farmland and other things for his education," Prasad said while talking to a section of media....
