PURNEA, July 25 -- Masked criminals shot and critically injured the 23-year-old son of the JD(U) vice-president of Purnea district, and his close relative in the town area late on Thursday evening, police said. The incident took place at Newalal Chowk under the Maranga police station area. "Shubham Kumar, the son of JD(U) leader Amarendra Kushwaha, received three bullet injuries while his son-in-law Sagar Kushwaha received two bullet injuries," police said, adding that they are undergoing treatment at a private super specialty hospital in Kasba, Purnea. Station House Officer (SHO) of Maranga police station Kaushal Kumar told HT over phone on Friday, "We have started probing the case from all possible angles." He added that no FIR was lodged till then. Meanwhile, police have obtained CCTV footage to identify the accused. "We have got some clues. The case will be cracked soon," a police officer said," adding that investigators are also probing the possibility that the attack was linked to an attempt to establish dominance over the locality, which has emerged as a narcotics hub in recent years. JD(U) leader Amarendra Kushwaha said that he would file an FIR in the case. "My only son is a small-time contractor leading a happily married life. We will lodge an FIR, but right now I am praying for the lives of both the injured." His wife, Rakhi Kushwaha, is a ward councillor. The JD (U) leader's son had allegedly been involved in the 2018 shooting of two correctional home employees in Purnea. During the investigation, police also found that he had a penchant for reckless driving and weapons. He was subsequently sent to a juvenile home after he allegedly opened fire at a college student for not giving way to his car. "The possibility of a gang war linked to the illegal narcotics trade cannot be ruled out," a police officer said. Six months ago, 27-year-old Suraj Bihari alias Suraj Yadav, described by locals as a diehard RJD supporter, was shot dead at the same location. The Newalal Chowk area has, in recent years, turned into a narcotics hub, with a large number of youths and even minors allegedly involved in the illegal trade, creating a serious law and order problem. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Shaurya Suman has warned of tough action against those involved in narcotics trade in the area....
