Prisoner, 27, dies at hosp; family claim assault during custody
PURNEA, June 10 -- A 27-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged at Madhepura divisional jail died during treatment at government college and hospital in Bihar's Madhepura on Tuesday, police said.
Police said Deepak Kumar, a vegetable vendor from Bhirkhi under Madhepura Nagar Parishad, had surrendered in the court on June 2 in connection with an attempt to murder case and was since lodged in jail. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and three children.
Jail superintendent Rajesh Kumar Roy said, "He complained of a stomach ache on Monday evening and was treated by a doctor posted in jail. He found temporary relief and ate dinner. When he again complained of a stomach ache late at night, he was taken to the hospital where he died." His body was later sent for post-mortem.
Deepak's family staged a protest on Tuesday, alleging custodial assault led to his death. Hundreds of locals joined them.
Roy rejected the allegations and said, "Deepak was suffering from a liver infection." Meanwhile, Sadar SHO Bimlendu Kumar said, "We are waiting for the autopsy report . Action will be taken accordingly."...
