Pregnant woman's death row turns political
Dhanbad, July 19 -- A day after doctors at Jamtara Sadar Hospital launched an indefinite strike over violence following the death of a pregnant woman, the controversy took a political turn on Saturday, with the BJP demanding a murder case be registered against the doctors involved in the treatment, while Jharkhand health minister Irfan Ansari accused the opposition of politicising the family's grief.
A BJP fact-finding team comprising former minister Amar Kumar Bauri and former MP Sunil Soren alleged gross medical negligence and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.
"The woman had walked into the hospital for delivery but returned home on four shoulders. We demand an impartial probe, registration of a murder case against the guilty doctors and healthcare personnel, and adequate compensation for the victim's family," Bauri said.
He also alleged that instead of addressing the family's grievances, the government was trying to divert attention by registering an FIR against BJP leaders following the violence at the hospital. Referring to the case lodged over the vandalism, Bauri said, "The BJP is not afraid of such cases. If required, thousands of party workers are ready to court arrest."
Former MP Sunil Soren also demanded that a murder case be lodged against those responsible, saying the deaths of both the mother and unborn child warranted a fair and transparent investigation.
Dr Ansari said it was unfortunate that the family's tragedy was being turned into a political issue. He maintained that the woman had been in critical condition and doctors made every possible effort to save her. The minister said the government would ensure a fair investigation into the incident and warned that those involved in violence at the hospital would face legal action....
