BETTIAH, Aug. 10 -- In a swift turn of events, a day after the bodies of a 34-year-old woman and her four children were recovered, Govindganj police in East Champaran on Saturday arrested the woman's husband for allegedly subjecting her to dowry-related torture in the Areraj subdivision of the district, police said on Sunday. Quoting FIR (206/26), lodged on the complaint of the deceased woman's brother, Shyamanand Mahato, Govindganj station house officer (SHO) Sachidanand Pandey said the woman, Sushila Devi, was allegedly subjected to torture by her husband over dowry. "She was pressured to bring motorcycle and gold items in dowry," reads the complaint. SHO Pandey said that the woman Sushila Devi was married to Dharmendra Kumar Mahato, a resident of Bhabhnauli village under Govindganj police station, in 2011 and had four children out of the relationship. On August 7, Sushila's body along with her four children -Amrita Kumari (11), Avinash Kumar (8), Pammi Kumari (8) and Ravi Kumar (4)- were recovered from a wetland area at Bhabhnauli village under Govindganj police station area of East Champaran, triggering a police investigation. The SHO said, "The woman's husband, Dharmendra Kumar Mahato, who was arrested on Saturday has been forwarded to jail on Sunday." He had attempted to portray the deaths as drownings, claiming that his wife had gone to collect fodder when the incident had taken place, Pandey added. Deceased's postmortem reports are awaited. "Probe is underway from all possible angles including murder, drowning and suicide due to harassment," said Ravi Kumar, sub divisional police officer (SDPO), Areraj. Meanwhile, Govindganj police have made eight people, including the deceased woman's husband, Dharmendra Kumar Mahato, and seven members of his family under sections 80 (dowry death) and 85 (penalizes a husband or his relative who subjects a woman to cruelty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act....
