PATNA, July 20 -- Patna Zoo is set to introduce several new animal species, including the gaur (commonly known as the Indian bison), the world's largest wild bovine, and white blackbucks by January 2027 under the Central Zoo Authority's (CZA) Animal Exchange Programme, Zoo Director Hemanth Patil said. The zoo currently houses two female gaurs, and two male gaurs will be brought from Karnataka to strengthen the breeding programme and improve genetic diversity. "We are introducing several new species under the CZA's animal exchange programme. The gaur and white blackbucks are among the most significant additions, and we expect them to strengthen our conservation and breeding efforts. The gaur or Indian bison is largest living bovine species in the world," Patil said. Under the programme, Patna zoo has previously exchanged several species with other zoos. It sent a Royal Bengal tiger, gharials, grey wolves and barn owls to the National Zoological Park in New Delhi, receiving a white tigress, Sangai deer, painted storks, white pelicans and blackbucks in return. The zoo is also in the process of bringing a male giraffe from Mysuru zoo and is exploring an exchange with Singapore zoo for a pair of white rhinos.
