NDA candidates in Seemanchal face individual anti-incumbency
PURNEA, Nov. 5 -- Forty -year-old Sumit Kumar, who runs a tea stall at Rajni Chowk in Purnea town, is looking furious over exercising his franchise for incumbent BJP MLA. "How long will he seek our support in the name of Modi and Nitish Kumar," he asked, expressing deep concern over the process of selection of candidates within the BJP. He is not even happy with the Congress party and accuses it of selling the ticket.
Similar voice was echoed by 45-year-old Suman Kumar of Kasba. "The LJP (RV), the NDA constituent, here has given the party ticket to a little known person who hardly anyone even within the party knows," he said while fearing the decision would affect the poll prospects of the party at least in this constituency. He too is not happy with the Congress party here which he alleged was hijacked by Pappu Yadav and hence the party denied the ticket to one of the best candidates of the party in Bihar. He declared the party would lose the most secured seat (Kasba) of the party in Bihar.
In yet another example, people, even BJP supporters are not comfortable with the BJP's decision to retain the candidate in Katihar, Pranpur and Korha assembly constituencies. "I wonder if the party (BJP) which boasts of being the largest party in the world fails in selecting good candidates when it is required to do so," a committed party (BJP) worker told HT in Katihar. "The party should have brought forward new and honest personalities keeping view to the bright future of the party," he added. The above examples are not just isolated examples. NDA is facing anti-incumbency against its candidates on several seats spreading in Seemanchal and Kosi. Both the regions have 37 assembly seats and in about 10 constituencies, the alliance (NDA) is in a tough contest as they are facing anti-incumbency against their contesting candidates -- a new worry for the ruling NDA.
However, the electorates are not against the ruling government. "The government has done a lot of things and they could have been better implemented if the MLAs had been upright and responsive," a college teacher told HT in Purnea requesting not to disclose her identity. "Many of us are thinking of voting for NOTA," she said, stressing the need for the leaders to learn from those leaders who work day and night for the people.
In 2020, BJP was the largest party in Seemanchal in terms of winning seats as the party had won eight seats and its ally JD-U had bagged four seats. Congress and AIMIM had won five seats each while RJD and CPI-ML could get one each. Seemanchal, comprising four districts of Purnea, Katihar, Araria and Kishanganj, is going to poll on November 11. The counting of votes will take place on November 14....
