Mokama MLA expelled from JD(U) for six years
PATNA, Oct. 25 -- A day after polling in the biennial legislative council polls, Janata Dal (United), one of the two pivotal partners of the ruling NDA, expelled its Mokama MLA, strongman Anant Singh and his wife Neelam Devi, also a former MLA, for six years over anti-party activities and supporting a rival candidate in the polls.
The JD(U) issued an office order signed by state president Umesh Kushwaha stating that the party has recommended to the Speaker of the state assembly to disqualify the Mokama MLA under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.
The statement said the decision to expel the Mokama MLA was taken because he flouted the directives of the party leadership, used unsavoury words against top party leaders and canvassed for a candidate of a rival party while working against the JD(U)'s official nominee in the biennial polls.
Singh, known as 'Chote Sarkar' in Mokama for his muscular clout in his constituency, had been vocal against Kumar, JD(U)'s sitting MLC from Patna graduates' constituency, right from the beginning of the poll campaign. He didn't budge even when senior party leaders tried to mediate a truce between the two leaders.
Singh had accused Kumar -- who has been a three-time MLC -- of framing him in various criminal cases, which is why he was determined to ensure Kumar's defeat. Hence, Singh kept supporting Jan Suraaj Party's Anuj Singh.
In his rebuttal to Singh's antics, Kumar dismissed him as a political lightweight.
The feud embarrassed the JD(U)'s top leadership throughout the election run. Union minister and senior party leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh Singh had even met both leaders to make them iron out differences, but it proved futile.
"I have all respect for former chief minister Nitish Kumar. But, I have certain issues with JD(U) MLC and I want his defeat," Singh had said.
In various interviews, Singh had even taken potshots at top JD(U) leaders too, claiming they were trying to weaken the party.
On Friday, top JD(U) leaders had indicated that there would be some action against the Mokama MLA with JD(U) MLC Neeraj himself stating that "people should wait for the time and things would unfold".
There was no reaction from the Mokama MLA over his expulsion. He, however, maintained in recent days that he would not be surprised if the party took any action against him.
Opposition party RJD termed the expulsion of the Mokama MLA as a clear sign of bickering within the JD(U).
"It is just the beginning and there would be more such expulsions as the internal feud in the party has now become all the more evident. The JD(U) is actually ablaze," said Shakti Singh Yadav, senior RJD leader and former chief spokesperson....
